I work as a marketing consultant and copywriter - but only occasionally these days. If it's an interesting project, I'm always happy to talk. I work directly with clients, from my garden office (see image above) and sometimes with mainstream creative agencies.
As a consultant, I help businesses to think, plan and act more clearly, more creatively and more effectively. This usually involves some combination of audit, research, strategic and creative thinking, and planning. As a copywriter, my main skill is in making complex subjects easier to understand, more interesting to read and more relevant to your audience.
My background in a nutshell. From early days as a graduate management trainee, I became a marketing manager in retail. In the early 80's, I worked in advertising and marketing agencies, and by the end of the decade was part of a start-up. By the end of the 90s, we had sold the business to WPP group. Thank you, Sir Martin.
Since then, I have carried out a wide range of consultancy projects, taught at a business school and, for the past ten years, specialised in 'marketing for older consumers'. This became something of a 'cause' and in 2013, I became founding Chairman of the Mature Marketing Association and its associated conference, the largest of its type in Europe.
All this has enabled me to work with a wide range of businesses, mainly corporates but also SMEs and start-ups, in most sectors - including food, drink, leisure, services and travel - and across most marketing activities, including advertising, direct marketing and digital. I know a little about a lot!
On paper, I have an MBA (Master of Business Administration) and a social science degree. I was elected to the Marketing Society in 1989 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 2015.

Consultancy and planning
A professional approach to business and marketing audits, research and strategic advice and planning. Combining experience, expertise and intellect with intuition, insight and creative thinking. Mature marketing The population is ageing, yet many people in marketing are stuck in an irrelevant and unproductive time warp of youth and fashion. As a specialist in this sector, I can help you re-align your business or brand with this mega trend. |
Copywriting
Making complex subjects easier to understand, more interesting to read and more relevant to your audience. You're most likely to need me for complicated ideas or sophisticated audiences. No point in using me for social media fluff or yoof brands. Speaking I have spoken at many conferences in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia on my specialist subject, mature marketing. I am always rated highly and more importantly, get plenty of laughs. I have also spoken at the House of Lords, on BBC Radio 4, and elsewhere. |
